How the IA helps me visualize illustrations in real spaces

As a designer and creative, I greatly enjoy the manual process: drawing, illustrating, composing. But I'm also very aware that creating a good visual piece does not end in technical executionBut how we present it, how we integrate it into an environment, how we make it tangible for others.

I recently finished a watercolor illustration that had a very emotional component. Two dogs, portrayed with soft techniques, designed to become a decorative piece. So far, so good.

The challenge comes later: How to show that work in a realistic context? How do you get anyone to see her to imagine that piece hanging in her own house?

The problem: professional shooting vs. real resources

So far, I used to resort to fast mounts, static mockups or just show the illustration on white background. But this does not convey all its decorative potential.

And like many entrepreneurs and independent designers, I don't always have a budget to produce a professional shooting: photography, styling, lighting, post-production...

That's where I started exploring an alternative solution: use IA to generate realistic custom scenarios.

The process: combining illustration and environment with IA

For this exercise, I decided to work with DALL·E integrated into ChatGPT. I went up the original illustration and formulated a clear prompt, guided by the kind of interior that would fit the style of my watercolor. The interesting thing is that the system understands context, style, tone and lighting, and generates the image adapted in seconds.

Real example of prompt I used:

"It shows this illustration framed and hung on a sofa in a Scandinavian-style living room, warm earth tones, soft lighting, natural wood details. The room must transmit warmth and visual harmony."

In addition, I generated other versions in other spaces such as a room:

With this process I generated several images in minutes, each with a different atmosphere, but all transmitting a realistic and emotional reading of the work. The interesting thing is that these images:

  • Accelerating decision-makingfor both final client and for use in portfolio, web or networks.
  • They provide context no need to make subsequent retouches.
  • They strengthen emotional connection between the piece and the space.

Reflection: design, IA and creative accessibility

From my perspective as a UX / IU designer, this type of use of IA does not replace creative work, expand. Let me. show ideas with more strength, more coherence and more realismnot dependent on external resources or slow processes.

In my case, this represents not only an aesthetic improvement, but a practical tool that gives me autonomy to present my work professionallyeven when I work on personal or low-scale projects, where I have no budget to be able to hire a product photographer.

Because showing a good idea is as important as running it. And now we have ways to make it faster, more real and more connected to the end user.
